Asus debuts 2024 OLED monitors with 480Hz, Dolby Vision, BFI

Asus is planning to launch new OLED monitors this year in 27, 32 and 39 inches with features like 480Hz, Dolby Vision HDR, and Black Frame Insertion – but not all in the same model. Let’s start by clearing up the confusion about the 27-inch PG27AQDP, which at the beginning of CES was reported to be glossy. It is in fact matte, as seen in FlatpanelsHD’s photo below. TFTCentral reports that Asus had forgotten to remove the protective plastic film on top, leading some media outlets to mistakingly report it as glossy. PG27AQDP will be the first of its kind with extremely fast 480Hz refresh rate at 1440p resolution, based on the next-generation OLED panel announced by LG Display at CES 2024.

32″ 4K OLED monitors

Asus also unveiled a new 32-inch WOLED monitor, PG32UCDP, with 4K resolution in addition to the 32-inch QD-OLED, PG32UCDM, that was unveiled last year. PG32UCDM features 240Hz refresh rate and for the first time Dolby Vision (only this monitor), while PG32UCDP offers dual-mode functionality to run at either 240Hz 4K or 480Hz 1080p – like LG’s upcoming monitor. Finally, there is the 39-inch curved and ultrawide PG39WCDM which boasts 1300 nits peak brightness, 3440×1440 resolution, and 240Hz refresh rate. Three of the new monitors are built on LG Display’s latests WOLED panels with MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology while PG32UCDM that was announced but never released last year has been upgraded from the 2nd to the 3rd generation QD-OLED panel from Samsung Display. The monitors are equipped with HDMI 2.1 ports and DisplayPort 1.4. Additionally, Asus showcased a new ergonomic monitor arm (ROG Ergo Monitor Arm) that can attach directly to your table as well as a mood lighting bar (ROG Aura Light Bar), both seen in FlatpanelsHD’s photos above and below.

BFI returns to OLED

The company has confirmed that PG27AQDP, PG32UCDP, and PG39WCDM, plus the 34-inch PG34WCDM announced earlier, will support BFI (Black Frame Insertion). BFI inserts black frames between picture frames to reduce motion blur at the expense of some flicker. Asus calls it ‘Extreme Low Motion Blur’ (ELMB) and it works only in SDR at 120Hz fixed (no 240Hz or VRR), according to TFTCentral. Asus PG32UCDM will be available in the first quarter of 2024 while PG32UCDP and PG27AQDP will be available in the second half of 2024. It is unclear when PG39WCDM will arrive.
