LoL players agree Worlds 2023 changes have already made this the ‘best Worlds ever’
The first-ever League of Legends World Championship Swiss stage still has several days to go. Still, players are already declaring the new-look format has made this the “best Worlds ever,” especially regarding entertainment and hype.
Worlds 2023 has seen a change to the long-standing format Riot Games favored since the early 2010s, with the group stage abandoned for a new Swiss stage.
While some League players were initially hesitant about the swap, things have been trending upward since the bracket arrived. Today, excitement hit its peak, with esports fans declaring the change “perfect” and suggesting this has already been the “best Worlds ever” because every match-up has been so interesting.
Not only is the Swiss stage entertaining, they said, but it feels like there’s more at stake in every match. This has created several blockbuster days already.
The other thing the format change has been praised for is wider interest: even though each League player has their favorite teams in the Swiss stage, they have to keep track of every other challenger and their journeys because each roster could face each other at any slice of the main event—leading to more games watched.
The topsy-turvy nature of this year’s event has also helped, fans said.
In particular, we never expected TL to do so well against T1 or for GAM to come so far after nearly not making it to Worlds. The stakes are much higher in Swiss, and the pros are learning quickly they don’t have many chances to qualify through to quarterfinals.
