PS Portal update might have accidentally killed your PS5 handheld
PS Portal update 3.0.0 has rolled out and has added the promised June 2024 tweaks that included adding public Wi-Fi security settings. However, players on the PS5 handheld accessory are already reporting huge connectivity issues that are killing the device.
Sony has yet to officially acknowledge any issue with update 3.0.0, but one check on PS Portal’s Reddit page shows a string of the hardiest users of the PS5 accessory struggling with the new patch. There seems to be a variety of problems varying from player to player, but the most common PS Portal issues have been connectivity issues, image quality drops, alongside poor compression.
These issues are being reported on X and Facebook, as well. Some have suggested that a fix can be made by factory resetting the device and then reinstalling the update, though I’ve not seen any verification that this works from other users. Given the update at hand was supposed to troubleshoot public WiFi connections, this seems like an ironic issue to have!
Other PS Portal features included in the update were additional touchscreen visuals and new battery-level features. Given neither should affect connectivity, it’s assumed that whatever update was made to the registration of public WiFi has a significant impact on the device. Given that without a good connection to your PS5 over WiFi the PS Portal is effectively a paperweight, this is a serious issue for those affected.
Here’s hoping that all is solved with the PS Portal’s recent update. I can only recommend that if you are affected by the issue, you head to the pages of Reddit and Facebook right now to do a bit of troubleshooting given that Sony hasn’t yet acknowledged it! In the meantime, flick that TV back on whenever you can to keep playing.
